Meet Sonny, the 70-year-old Body Builder

Sam "Sonny" Bryant firmly believes it's not age that makes a person old, it's state of mind. Age is just a number.

Sam “Sonny” Bryant began body building at the age of 44. He didn’t start out with competing in mind, but now, at 70 years old, he’s an award-winning regular.

If you ask me when I’m going to retire, I say never. I love to work; I love to work out.

Bryant first began going to the gym in order to relieve stress from a difficult marriage. He really had no idea what he was doing at first, he just knew he needed something. He didn’t know anything about lifting weights or body building, but he spent hours in the gym, learning how to work out.

Eleven months after first stepping into a gym, someone told Bryant about a body building competition and that he believed Bryant was ready to compete. Bryant says he had never even thought of competition until then. But he went.

At that first competition, he won 3rd in the Novice category and 4th in the Masters. Bryant says after that first time, he was like an addict. He was totally hooked and wanted more. He returned to his gym and focused on body building. Up to that point, he says he had merely been working out and it was time to up his game.

People have the misconception that age makes you old. But I realized it’s state of mind that makes you old. Age is just a number.

Bryant firmly believes inactivity and incorrect thinking is what truly makes a person feel old. He says he knows men who are younger than him and yet seem much older because “all they do is sit and watch TV.” He personally can’t stand to be inactive and just sit around.

Going out dancing is a favorite activity of Bryant’s, and he says he feels the same now as he did at 44. His goal is to encourage people to realize they can do the things he’s doing. There’s no reason it can’t be done if people will change their thought processes.
