A PIVOT Project Group is Forming. Space is Limited.
Are You Ready to Move from Dieting to a Lifestyle Transformation? So many of us have become fed up with our sedentary lifestyle, but we don’t have a realistic way out of it. Sure, there are plenty of gyms and fad diets to sign up for, but we know intuitively that these things are not enough – so we stick with the status quo.
In 2013, after I had a TIA (a small stroke), I knew my status quo had to change. And it was then that I realized my life depended on it. Thankfully, I was able to make that mid-life health pivot and I learned some surprising things. You can read about some of this in a series of articles I’ve written called My Fitness Journey. I learned that the most important thing that allowed me to change my lifestyle were my “fitness friends,” people who were on the journey with me encouraging me to persevere when the going got tough.

To my point, recent research has shown that being fit and being sedentary are both “contagious.” There is an endless amount of diets and workout plans that can help us get healthier, but without people and a holistic approach, these diets end up being good ideas we can’t stick with. We lose a few pounds for a short time, then we slowly slip back into our unhealthy status quo lifestyle.
If you are serious about getting fit, I have a proposition for you: Join us on a year-long journey that will help you make the fundamental lifestyle changes you need to make to stay healthy for a lifetime. I am calling it The PIVOT Project.
OK, Here’s the Plan…
As a PIVOT Project beta test participant, you are committing to a year-long experience with 5-8 other people who are going to journey together in pursuit of a healthy lifestyle change.
As a PIVOT Projec beta test participant, you are committing to a year-long experience with 5-8 other people who are going to journey together in pursuit of a healthy lifestyle change.
You’ll get a physical from your doctor, join us on a retreat, then regularly connect with your fitness friends for most of the year as you train for a race or an adventure of your choice. All along the way, you’ll be improving your diet in small positive steps. By the end of the year, you will likely see a fantastic transformation and you’ll have made the changes in your lifestyle that will stick for the long haul.
Here are a Few More Details…
You will start the journey with some tests. You will need to get a physical from your doctor and get your cholesterol and blood sugar checked (A1C). You will also need to get a body composition test at BodymetRX. This test will give you a lot of great data about your muscle mass and fat composition. We will revisit these tests at the end of the program to check our progress.
Next, we will spend a short weekend together getting connected as fitness friends, goal-setting, and getting some education we’ll need for the journey. We’ll talk through steps we will need to take to create capacity and bandwidth to win at this endeavor.
Then, we’ll each choose a race or adventure six to nine months in the future that we will have to train for. This event should take us out of our comfort zone.
Here are some examples you might choose:
- Run a half marathon
- Climb a high peak like Mount Whitney or Half Dome
- Compete in the CrossFit Open
- Do a 50-100 mile+ hike
- Do a cycling race or triathlon
- Do a tough mudder or obstacle race
Ideally, this should be something that gives you butterflies in your stomach when you think about it. I’m a big believer in the magical power of getting outside your comfort zone. We’ll also set some short-term supporting goals leading up to the event.
Zoom Meeting Check-ins (every other week)
We are going to tell all of our friends about the big goal we are training for and meet every other week on a Zoom call. On these calls, we’ll celebrate wins and encourage each other when we fail to do the things we’ve committed to. Here is what we will be covering on each call:
Food debrief. We are going to commit to eating in an 8 to 10 hour window (intermittent fasting). We’ll also be tracking our food on an app and reviewing what we experienced. The feedback we get from the app will help us make slow, consistent improvements to our diet.
We’ll start by cutting out sugars, then processed and fast foods – slowly! We’ll eventually replace low-quality foods with more nutrient dense foods – slowly. Some of us might need to lose weight, but we’re not going to try to do that right away. We are not going to “work off the pounds”. Rather, we are going to use the gains we are making through exercise to give us the emotional momentum we need to become more disciplined in our eating.
For those trying to lose weight, I recommend doing a resting metabolism test at BobymetRX and setting your daily calorie budget at 15% to 20% less than this. You should not be losing more than 2-5 lbs a month.
Physical conditioning debrief. We’ll discuss our training regimen and do some coaching around this. I highly recommend CrossFit or joining a club related to the sport of your choice so you can get proper coaching.
Life happenings debrief. We’ll talk about highs and lows of life in general. This is just as important as talking about food and exercise because it helps us keep the precious emotional reserves we need to stay disciplined.
In between Zoom sessions, I’ll be sending you video content on diet, fitness, the growth mindset, maintaining a strong sense of purpose, and practical life hacks for managing stress. I’ll also share videos of people from their 40s to 100s who are crushing it in the fitness department. We all need the constant drip irrigation of motivation. Finally, during the week you will have access to me for coaching input via the Marco Pollo app. I’ll be checking in with you one on one as well.
We “Do the Thing” and Celebrate
That goal you set for yourself that you’ve been training for? Now it’s time to do it. Once we finish our individual races and adventures (some of us might choose to do an adventure together) we will retake those tests we did at the beginning of the program and reconnect in person at a second retreat. We’re going to celebrate our wins and plan the next cycle of our fitness plan.
I’ve done this for five years and it’s worked masterfully. Each year, I’ve been able to build on the prior year to improve my diet and fitness level – and complete increasingly challenging adventures. You will, no doubt, learn to do the same.
Are You In? Are You Sure?
I’d be lying to you if I said that you could work out 10 minutes a day, eat whatever you want, and have cheat days on the weekends. Changing your lifestyle is going to take a lot of hard work, time, and sacrifice. You are literally going to have to rewire your brain. I can tell you from experience that it’s worth it and, most importantly, you won’t be doing it alone.
All of us overestimate what we can do in a month or two and underestimate what we can do in a year. Moreover, none of us can scarcely imagine where we might be after five years of sustained effort. Join us and be amazed at where you are in a year – thinner, healthier, and on a new trajectory in life.
The alternative is that you continue to gain a pound a year and watch yourself age prematurely – succumbing to the lifestyle diseases that kill most Americans well before their time. So, are you in?
Get on the Interest List
I’ll be collecting submissions through the month of March, choosing a cohort, then giving everyone a call to talk about next steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
There is no cost for the program; however, each participant is responsible for the direct costs of the retreat, assessments, and any other costs associated with their fitness journey such as gym memberships, travel, equipment, etc.
This is an experiment and you are (sort of) a lab rat. We expect you to provide feedback throughout the course and afterward about how it has helped you and how we might improve the experience for future participants. We would also love a testimonial quote or video clip at the end of the program if you’ve benefited from it.
